He is one of India’s current fast bowlers who is consistent with his pace as his bowling average in almost all of the matches is above 140Km/h. Moreover, he can swing the bowl on both sides.

Mohammed Shami is a very hard-working bowler, but unfortunately, several injuries have disrupted his career and affected his international career. Thus if you want to know how he started playing cricket and became one of the world’s deadliest bowlers, keep reading below.

Early Cricket Life

Mohammed Shami was born in 1990 in a village in Uttar Pradesh, and his father was a cricketer turned farmer. He started taking an interest in cricket and bowling from a very young age, and a cricket coach saw him and decided to coach him to prepare him for professional cricket. So he had to travel from village to city, which was over 10 miles daily, to cricket coaching. Mohammed Shami worked hard on his skills and bowling technique, and due to some reason, his coach decided to send him to Kolkata to try out for a domestic cricket tournament.

So he was seen by the former secretary of the Bengal cricket association, and he took care of him and offered him to join his club. He performed well while playing for Town club, and then he was picked up as a selector for the Bengal U-22 team. Thus finally going through all their struggles, he debuted for Bengal in the T-20 match in 2010 and took three wickets in his debut match. He then constantly began playing for Bengal in several domestic cricket tournaments such as Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, etc.

One of his domestic cricket career highlights was when he took eleven wickets in a single match in Ranji Trophy. His continuous bowling performance earned him a chance to play for the Indian cricket team.

International Debut

Mohammed Shami made his international debut in ODI cricket in January 2013 against Pakistan and took a wicket in his debut match. Later in that year, he was also called up again for the ODI series with Australia and took seven wickets in two matches, and emerged as great future talent for the Indian team. Next year he continued to perform well and took 11 wickets on India’s tour of New Zealand in 2014; these fantastic bowling figures booked his spot in the Indian team for the Asia cup. In that year, He also became the second-fastest Indian bowler to complete 50 international wickets.

Shami played his first test match for India against West Indies in late 2013, where he took nine wickets. He could not ask for a better debut than this as it was the best bowling figure by any Indian debut pacer. He then went on to play test series against South Africa and New Zealand and did really well by taking sixteen wickets in total. He has proved his potential of becoming one of the greatest bowlers several times as he bowls with strict line and length that helps him pick wickets.

Mohammed Shami In IPL

Due to his impressive performance at the domestic level, he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011. However, he only played a single match for the KKR in his debut IPL season. After that, he was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders for two more years but failed to make an appearance in the league. Now before the start of IPL 2014, Mohammed Shami was bought by Delhi Daredevils, and he then played twelve matches for the first time.

But once again, when he was in form and playing well, a knee injury happened, and he could not participate much in the next two IPL. He played very few matches regarding his knee injury. Mohammed Shami became fully fit with no single injury before the start of IPL 2019, and he was then picked up by Kings XI Punjab, and there he played for a couple of years, taking his first three-wicket haul in the IPL. Shami was applauded for his comeback in the IPL and for performing well.

For the following IPL 2022, Shami was bought by Gujarat Titans, where he will hope to improve his bowling performance and tend to win the IPL title for his team this year. Thus Mohammed Shami has proved how persistence and hard work can pay you off and how he did change his life from simply playing in the village and now playing at the International level.
